PERSONALITY:
When it comes to first impressions Komaeda comes across as polite, soft-spoken, easy-going, and a bit self-deprecating (an understatement). A happy go lucky sort of guy who just accepts things as they come and goes with the flow. A person who is more likely to help out others first before thinking about himself. Not that this isn't an accurate impression of him, but it's far from the whole picture. Under the surface, he’s a rather unstable and pessimistic individual, though this comes out in various levels throughout the series.
Komaeda’s luck has formed him from a small child, he has seen nothing but tragedies, but since every tragedy is followed by something that can be called good luck, he frames everything bad in a give or take method. A plane is hijacked, bad luck, a meteor kills the hijacker, good luck, his parents are killed, bad luck, he inherits a huge fortune and becomes independent, good luck. This sort of reasoning is what helped him survive his bad and good luck, however it was also what twisted his concept of hope and despair.
Hope can only be reached by experiencing despair. The deeper the despair, the brighter the hope that will follow. His life has more or less proven this principle to him he has no reason to doubt the validity of it. He’s not particularly surprised when the class trip quickly tumbles down into the despair of the killing game. He had been expecting the worst and got it, and since the worst was happening, he would do all he could to bring the great hope he sought at the end of it and sacrificing himself to do it was an expected part of it all.
Sacrifice is only a small price to Komaeda, whose self-worth is so low he’s outright self-destructive. His risky behavior is less about his luck saving him in the end and more about hoping that perhaps this time it will be him affected. He has a deep-seated death wish, but also to matter. To leave a mark on the world and at least amount to something in his last moments. It’s the deepest wish of someone who’s a walking natural disaster.
Komaeda’s unfortunate life is not the only reason for his actions, he also suffers from two very serious medical conditions, one is stage 3 malignant lymphoma and the other is frontotemporal dementia which is heavily implied to be a behavioral variant type. Frontotemporal dementia is a decay of the frontal lobe and behavioral variant type affects how a person behaves, interprets things, and most importantly their ability to control impulses. While Komaeda’s actions are all methodical and carefully thought out, the major issue in choosing to act in the way he does is the complete lack of impulse control he has. He will go with the first thought that comes to mind and then plot it out without consideration for other methods. We also see this in how he interacts with others, blurting out the first thing he thinks rather than more tactful replies or comments. He will only realize he said something inappropriate after seeing people react, and then he will try and play it off as a joke. It makes being understood difficult and that is where a lot of problems with him and the rest of the class lay.
The other problem in Komaeda’s approach to the class is his views on talent. He places everyone else in the class in a station above himself. But, he feels confined by his own uncontrollable talent. If he didn’t have a talent, if talent didn’t exist, he would have lived an ordinary life. This desire is rooted deep down inside him. However, despite this inner desire he still views those with talent as embodiments of Hope. Many times he accepts things and assumes he might be wrong or not communicating well because everyone else is talented and there’s no way it would be their fault.
He goes through great lengths to reason and support the class from the side during Killing Life, to his own disservice. He’s so good at feeding information subtly and manipulating everyone to the path he envisions for them, that no one notices just how much he has done or accomplished. It’s not until he is actively against everyone that we see how much he was doing. We don’t see how much everyone frustrates him until he has lost all patience and excuses for their mistakes. While everyone was a beacon of Hope they could do no wrong. After they were revealed to be Despair every small transgression became like a blatant sign of idiocy.
ABILITIES:
Komaeda has no special abilities as a regular human being. However, he is the Super High School Level Lucky Student, which means he has strange luck.
Nagito claims his only skill is being lucky; however he is actually rather intelligent. He's shown to be good with technology, specifically computers and machines. He may also be good and making bombs, or at least finding and following instructions about them. He's also good with puzzles and solving mysteries. He reads a lot and is very observant of things around him. He's very good at obscurification, manipulation, and thinking four steps ahead of everyone else. He's also really good at cleaning and other domestic activities. Though, apparently, he isn't good at cooking.
But, we should really talk about his luck. His luck isn't just normal, it's completely out there. It's so high that almost anything in his favor will happen. Play Russian roulette with 6 bullets? He'll win. However his luck has a huge cost, it comes with incredible bad luck right before. The best example is the events he speaks of in the game. A plane he was on was hijacked, bad luck. The hijacker died to a meteor hitting the plane, good luck. His parents also died bad luck. He inherited a fortune and became independent, good luck. He was kidnapped by a serial killer, bad luck. He found a winning lottery ticket when the killer was arrested, good luck.. Generally, his luck brings misfortune to those around him as well. Of course this isn't a thing he has control over, this is just a thing that tends to happen to him.
